Jaime Monroy On Writing

"I remember jokes that weren't funny to me in a scene on different sitcoms: Lucy (Lucille Ball) on "Life With Lucy' taught me: you never tell the writers it's not funny. you just say this isn't working!' So the writers from time to time would come to me while I was worming up an audience and ask if I had a funnier line. I was surprised at how many times I've come across re-runs of television snows where my ad-libs ended up as a dialogue on a show"

"My point is what I learned most about writingsuccessfully for sitcoms is that you can't do jokes to do jokes, the jokes have to be on-story In ether words, you cas't he doing a stand-up comedy routine just to get laughs, your jokes have to drive the story-line forward."

Jaime Monroy writes jokes for Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, NBC. Burbank, CA

"Like I always say writers. the difference between sentences and dialogue is 'sentences bore people'. 'dialogue drives the story forward."

Jaime Monroy punches up all kinds of scripts:
sitcoms, game shows. talk show…even a parade.
"I worked on television show with top writers like
Mitzi McCall, Hal Kanter and meny more."

Hare you ever listened to a guest speaker and you find yourself failing asleep Have you ever been listening to another speaker and they have you on the edge of your seat. like a fortune letter revealing your future? This is the difference between 'sentences' versus dialogue'."
